Today it’s common to see families and individuals trying to recreate restaurant recipes in the interest of convenience, saving money, or tackling a new challenge. While most meals can be prepared with standard appliances, there are a handful of recipes which require specialized equipment.
Traditional margarita pizza for example needs to be cooked in a stone cooking floor. While stone floor ovens used to be limited to commercial kitchen, there’s now a portable stone oven – the Roccbox – which is affordable and accessible enough for most households.
The Roccbox only takes 15 minutes to reach 930 degrees Fahrenheit (as opposed to the hour many traditional BBQ’s require). Users are able to heat the oven using the included wood or gas burner. Once at the peak temperature, users are able to cook restaurant quality pizza in just 90 seconds.
The Roccbox is built with commercial grade materials, with three stainless steel folding legs for durability and stability. Despite the durable construction, the oven only weighs 44lbs which is comparable to carrying a large desktop computer or a tightly packed suitcase.
At the core of the device is the cordierite stone floor which lies on top of dense insulation engineered to capture heat. The oven is also specifically engineered to be easy to carry; the burners are detachable from the frame, and the corners are rounded for safer lifting.
Roccbox is more than just for pizza. It also can be used for roasting, grilling, braising, baking, and frying. There’s also a smoking attachment in the works which will make it possible for users to smoke meats and fish.
Unlike traditional methods of cooking food with fire, the Roccbox is engineered to produce a minimal amount of smoke while the food cooks. Despite the power, it still falls under the same category as household BBQs.
Tom Gozney, founder and CEO of Roccbox mentions on his Indiegogo campaign page that, “I wanted to take the hard work out of wood fired cooking. Making it possible for anyone to own a stone bake oven with even the smallest outdoor space and a limited budget has been a dream of mine since I started The Stone Bake Oven Company 6 years ago.
The Roccbox is available for pre-order on their Indiegogo campaign, with an estimated ship date of June or July this year. The oven comes in Stone Grey and Grass Green. The crowdfunding campaign was fully funded on April 14th, earning them $1.1 million – 1002% of the original goal. The Roccbox currently is available for $559 – the retail price, since they sold out of discounted rewards. Each purchase includes the oven with the thermometer, gas burner unit, wood burner unit, pizza peel, instructions, and a recipe book.
