Motorcycles are a great way to get around, however, for many, they’re also treacherous. While there are plenty of motorcycle safety devices on the market, the primary limitations of them are that they often require extensive modifications or are difficult to use.
Cosmo Connected is a removable rear brake light with emergency responder alerts. Mimicking the brake light of a car, Cosmo shines bright red when a user decelerates.
The deceleration of the rider is measured via the accelerometer within Cosmo. The light goes on upon deceleration even if the rider doesn’t press on their brake. The built-in gyrometer detects changes in the angle of the rider’s head in all three dimensions. The electronic signatures of these movements coupled with the accelerometer readings
The companion mobile app is designed to save lives. If the device detects a rider’s fall, the helmet warns the app via the Bluetooth connection and automatically alerts a roadside assistance provider to try and help the driver. Should the rider be unresponsive, the operator will call emergency services within three minutes. One of the more notable features of the app is the fact that users can program their medical history into the app, so emergency providers know what to expect when they arrive. In the case of an emergency, alerts also are sent via text message to select contacts.
Cosmo Connected is designed to be simple to install. The magnetic adapter is intended to stick to the user’s helmet without any modifications. It’s equipped with a pre-installed double-sided adhesive. Users only need to place it on their helmet, let it sit for eight hours, and users can clip or unclip their Cosmo as desired. In the case of accidents, the device is designed to detach from the user’s helmet.
As far as battery life goes, Cosmo Connected is equipped with a 900 mAh lithium ion rechargeable battery which has an autonomy of 5h to 8h continuous use and up to 5 to 7 days of standby.
The device comes in six different colors: shiny white, shiny black, satin black, matte black, silver, and carbon.
So far the makers of Cosmo Connected have raised over $46,000 via crowdfunding with an estimated shipping date of as early as July 2017. Early bird pricing for the device starts at about €99 which is €20 off the future retail price of €119.
