If you spend your nights tossing and turning, trying to find the perfect way to position yourself, a comfortable pillow might be key to a solid sleep. Manufacturers have tried to create the perfect pillow by stuffing them with items like cotton, feathers, or memory foam–some of which have been designed specifically for back sleepers vs side sleepers, and run upwards of $180. Purple, the same folks that brought you the popular Purple “No Pressure” mattress, hopes to provide the silver bullet for all sleepers. Purple Pillow is an innovative new bed-buddy currently gathering funds on Kickstarter. The campaign has only about a week remaining, but they’re not losing any sleep over that; it has already raised more than $1.1M from over 8,000 backers on an initial $25,000 goal.
Purple began its mission last year after they launched the campaign for their Purple Bed. The product received such an overwhelming amount of support they decided to create what they call a new “game-changing product”: the Purple Pillow. Overall, the pillow is made of three parts: hyper-elastic polymer, an adjustable air booster and a soft cover.
Attempting to attain balance between neck support, softness, firmness and overall shape, Purple has constructed the resting surface from hyper-elastic polymer (there’s a layer of that stuff in their mattress too); the material is strong and stretchy and is arranged in a pattern that helps the product retain its shape and comfort, so you do not need to worry about adjusting or fluffing the pillow. The design also attempts a more natural alignment with the shape and contours of your neck and the back of your head.
Purple is also introducing a new, and never-before-seen method of adjusting the height of your pillow; it comes equipped with an adjustable air booster. The product itself is 3 inches tall, and the booster enables an extra 2 inches of vertical range.
For many, staying cool is also a critical requirement for a good sleep. To address this, the company offers buyers a super-soft polyester pillow case. According to Purple’s campaign, the pillow itself already reads at a much cooler temperature than competitive products. However, if temperature is your top priority, a pillow equipped with a layer of cooling gel may be an alternative option.
The evolution of sleep technology is only getting better–this may be because it is becoming more and more difficult to sleep for the recommended duration (7 hours). According to CDC (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 1 in 3 adults are not getting enough sleep. As a result, many people are constantly increasing the risk of long-lasting, life-threatening conditions like diabetes, heart failure, and obesity. Besides the benefits of comfort and support, a smart sleep gear like this can potentially help consumers avoid the scarier stuff that leads to The Long Nap.
The standard sized Purple Pillow is 24” x 16.” On Kickstarter, there are still $79 backing options available, and for $1,299, you can even bundle up a King Sized Purple Bed with two Purple Pillows. The first batch is scheduled to ship in December, and once out in the wild, MSRP is expected to be $109.00.
